Barbie’s new collection has a distinctively Aussie look, with some of the 12 new mini models inspired by Australian beauties.

The Barbie Basics Collection was launched at Australian Fashion Week.

It has 12 dolls styled in the timeless little black dress, each featuring faces inspired by supermodels, including Aussies.

“You need to have that little bit something extra even in something like Barbie and this line delivers that,” the Sydney Morning Herald quoted Robert Best, Barbie principal designer, as saying.

“It is aimed at a fashion consumer and a consumer who’s going to be aware of the kind of girls like Miranda Kerr, Abbey Lee Kershaw and Catherine McNeil who are working and dominating the pages of fashion magazines,” he added.

On Thursday morning, executives from IMG Fashion, which owns Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week; Lincoln Center; the Council of Fashion Designers of America; Mercedes-Benz and, the City of New York unveiled details of the new tents, which will be inaugurated during the spring 2011 collections from Sept. 9 to 16.

Guests will enter the tented lobby through a new facade created by architectural firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro. The entrance and facade, which is 60 feet wide and 70 feet high, will be located in the corner between the Metropolitan Opera House and David H. Koch Theater. The lobby will feature sponsorship areas, digital signage and seating areas for visitors.

The Lincoln Center shows will feature four main venues: The Theatre, The Stage, The Studio and The Box Presentation Space. The Theatre venue, with an all-black interior, will have seating for 969 people and the option for a straight or U-shaped runway. The Stage venue, in white with gray carpeting, can seat 740, with stadiumlike bench seats. The Studio will be the smallest runway venue, for 369 people in its gray environment, and The Box space is designated for presentations and events, with an ability to accommodate 125 people.

There is also an additional venue called The Courtyard, a glass-encased outdoor space that could be used for informal presentations.

Lisa Holladay, Mercedes-Benz USA’s manager of brand experience and marketing, disclosed the company renewed its sponsorship deal with IMG Fashion “at least through 2013.”

As part of the move, IMG Fashion also is making several upgrades, and Zach Eichman, a vice president at the company, said there are plans to create a more designer-centric Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Web site. In addition, the new venue also will embrace technology more heavily for registration and credentials. To that end, Eichman unveiled a new partnership with Fashion GPS, offering designers the ability to manage their invitations and RSVPs, and allowing guests the ability to check themselves in using bar code scanners and kiosks.

With IMG Fashion as her first client, Mallis won’t abandon Fashion Week entirely. But with her stepping down from IMG as the veritable face of the event, Fashion Week moving to Lincoln Center, and Stephanie Winston Wolkoff signing on as Fashion Week director (a brand-new position), it sounds like we’re in for a hugely different Fashion Week come September.

“I’m very proud to be an American designer,” Thom Browne explained. “But we do have to sell in a true selling season of men’s in order to get production started. Getting sales done in June and early July is really important from a production standpoint….It means getting the next collection done two months earlier, which isn’t easy. And even sooner, actually, because we have to get everything and everyone there.”

But the CFDA and IMG Fashion doesn’t seem too eager to jump on board, with Executive Director of the CFDA Steven Kolb saying, “Unless there’s a real demand for it, it would be a difficult thing to build, because you wouldn’t be guaranteed the right designers would participate. How would you layer marquee names with the emerging designers so it’s fully representative? That’s been the challenge.”

However, the company were quick to respond to the whispers in order to stamp out any speculation, insisting that Pilati will be in New York for the Costume Institute Gala on May 3. Valérie Hermann, the CEO of Yves Saint Laurent in America, apologised on his behalf;

“Stefano Pilati, YSL’s creative director, has asked me to convey how sorry he is not to be able to join us tonight [at the Opera Gala], and sends his very best wishes from Paris, where he is busy with the coming collection, “ she said, adding “somebody still has to work in this company.”

Another consequence of this unexpected absence on Mr Pilati’s part was a lonely, dull evening for poor actress and hipster/muse Chloe Sevigny, who said “I came to hang out with Stefano and now he’s not here so I’m kind of disappointed.”

Meanwhile, Sevigny’s sexy black YSL jumpsuit, designed by the absent Pilati, was probably the best retort to all those rumours.

Some of the world’s largest and most influential fashion labels including Giorgio Armani and Prada have united to distribute their shows evenly across a full week, meaning the biggest shows aren’t condensed into three days and smaller labels will have a chance of being seen.

Armani said: “I am happy that my call for responsibility has been agreed to and I don’t think I was the only one hoping for it: the moment had come to reconsider in earnest the issue of the fashion calendar, because a whole industrial system revolves around it.”

He added the agreement was reached with the Camera della Moda, Italy’s governing fashion body.

He said: “The agreement by the major designers, which protects the emerging ones as well, has been reached with the mediation of Camera della Moda and demonstrates we Italians, if we really want it, are perfectly able to assert ourselves without fear in order to enhance what the world acknowledges to be a rich and inimitable creative heritage.”

Prada’s chief executive Patrizio Bertelli added: “Milan Fashion Week is an event of fundamental importance.

“Today we have made a significant step forward which goes in the right direction: in fact, it underlines a sense of belonging we have been afraid of losing because of recent controversies.”

Vogue editor Anna Wintour caused huge controversy at this year’s Fashion Week in March when the show was increased to five days, but she opted to attend only for her originally planned three days, prompting many designers to change their show dates in order to accommodate her.

Organizer Gwen Devoe explained the purpose and importance of Full Figured Fashion week, citing that the plus-size consumer is spending over $25 billion dollars a year on clothes. It’s a market that must be acknowledged and must be catered to, even in an industry so focused on maintaining a smaller size.

“Crystal Renn became a household name. Vogue Curvy debuted to great fanfare. Stores like Forever 21 and Target launched new, hip plus size lines. But we’re still not there–plus-size fashion is still not being taken seriously enough by the industry. It’s not a novelty–it’s a reality for millions of women across the country.”
