Alexander McQueen To Be Honoured At The British Fashion Awards

On Tuesday evening 7 December the British Fashion Awards will present an Outstanding Achievement in Fashion Design honour to Alexander McQueen, who died in February.

To commemorate his life, night’s award ceremony will open with a film, featuring some of the most iconic pieces from the Alexander McQueen archive, directed by Nick Knight and styled by Edward Enninful, and featuring a soundtrack by Björk.

Speaking about his inspiration for the film Nick Knight, commented, “This film is my way of speaking about a very unique and important person who changed my life. My desire was to speak in some way about the dark and the light contained within Lee, and within us all.”

“The Outstanding Achievement Award celebrates the exceptional talent of an individual who has contributed to the British fashion industry both internationally, and here in the UK throughout their career. There was only one person we felt we could recognize with this award this year – Lee McQueen,” said Harold Tillman, chairman of the BFC.

First Look At Less Expensive McQ Line

McQ is a less expensive Alexander Mcqueen line. McQ currently represents about 20% of McQueen’s business, but Jonathan Akeroyd, the brand’s president and CEO, expects it to grow to 35 percent by 2012: “We’ve got a strong ambition for it.” With prices lowered by 25%: jeans prices at 175 euros ($235), dresses at 200 euros ($235), jackets starting at 300 euros ($405) and printed T-shirts at 70 euros ($95).

Although the line will not release the full Fall 2011 line until February the Pre-Fall collection was released.

Metropolitan Museum of Art Announces Alexander McQueen Exhibition

The Costume Institute at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art has announced it is to stage an exhibition to honour the late Alexander McQueen.

Called Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty, the exhibition will be on view from May 4 through July 31, 2011 and will encompass all of his work, from his Central Saint Martins postgrad collection in 1992 to his final runway presentation this past February.

“Alexander McQueen’s iconic designs constitute the work of an artist whose medium of expression was fashion,” said Thomas P. Campbell, Director of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. “This landmark exhibition continues the Museum’s tradition of celebrating designers who changed the course of history and culture by creating new possibilities.”

Hells Angels Sue Alexander McQueen Over Trademarked Logo

The Hells Angels motorcycle group sued fashion design house Alexander McQueen and retail chain Saks Inc. for trademark infringement for selling handbags, jewelry and clothing using the club’s death-head design.

In the complaint, filed Monday in Los Angeles federal court, the motorcycle club says it never approved use of its name and trademarked horned death skull by McQueen’s company or retailers Saks and Zappos Inc.

At issue is the McQueen label’s use of the Angels’ skull-and-wings “Death head” design in its high-fashion creations, like the $1,565 “Hells Angels Jacquard Box Dress”, the $495 “Hells Angels Four-Finger Ring” and the ever-popular “Hells Angels Pashmina”.

On Monday, Harry Potter costume designer Jany Temime was accused of stealing the design of an Alexander McQueen dress for a wedding scene in the latest Potter film.
